Group Therapy

Group therapy uses the power of shared experience and mutual support. Recognising yourself in others can be an important catalyst for change.

Treatment Overview

What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which a small group of clients (usually 6 to 10 people) works together with one or two therapists. The group format is not simply a practical alternative to individual therapy: the group itself is the therapeutic medium. Shared experiences, mutual recognition, feedback and support from fellow group members are powerful agents for change. Group therapy is evidence-based and effective for a wide range of complaints.

How does Group Therapy work?

1

The group meets regularly, usually once a week, for a fixed period. Sessions last approximately 90 minutes.

2

Within the group, participants share their experiences, give and receive feedback and practise new behaviours in a safe environment.

3

The therapist guides the process, ensures safety and confidentiality, and helps the group to learn from each other's experiences.

4

What happens in the group stays in the group: confidentiality is a fundamental ground rule.
