Achtergrond

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. The basic idea is that unhelpful thinking patterns (cognitions) and behaviours contribute to psychological distress and maintain it. By identifying and changing these patterns, complaints can be reduced and your quality of life improved. CBT is evidence-based: it has been extensively researched and proven effective for many complaints.

How does CBT work?

  • Together with your therapist you identify the thinking patterns and behaviours that are maintaining your complaints.
  • You learn to challenge unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more balanced, realistic alternatives.
  • Behavioural experiments help you test out new ways of acting and build new experiences.
  • Between sessions you practise with exercises and assignments to apply what you have learned in daily life.

Who is CBT suitable for?

  • CBT is suitable for a wide range of psychological complaints, including anxiety disorders, depression, OCD and PTSD.

  • It is effective for both acute problems and more chronic complaints.

  • CBT is also available online via video call at Mavera GGZ.
